Deuteronomy - The Romans of the Old Testament | James Browning | Week 08

Scholars often call Deuteronomy the “Romans of the Old Testament” because of its foundational teachings on ethics, law, and grace. In this class, we will first explore how New Testament authors understood Deuteronomy—and the law as a whole—under the New Covenant. Then, we will turn our attention to understanding how Deuteronomy can help shape our worldview by studying the historical context, literary design, and wisdom of the book.

This lesson explores how the temptations of success and comparison can lead to dangerous forms of pride that cause us to forget God's grace. By examining the illusion of self-sufficiency during prosperous times and the trap of self-righteousness, we uncover how pride can damage our covenant relationship and isolate us from those who need the gospel.
